Getting older is a natural part of life. As we approach our golden years, our state of health will be determined by many things, most importantly by the way we lead our lives. Taking good care of our body and learning positive ways to deal with stress now can slow down or even prevent problems that often come with getting older.
The changes we go through as we get older depend on a number of things. Chronic diseases such as high blood pressure or diabetes runs in the family, so there are higher chances of having these problems if there is a history. However, we can reduce the chances of getting inheritable illnesses through our lifestyle choices, e.g. by eating right and choosing to exercise.
An important way to stay fit at any age is exercise. Exercise helps us feel better and makes the body strong. Exercise can be anything from walking or gardening to working out at the gym; the important point is to get ourselves to move at least 30 minutes every day. It has also been found active people are less likely to get depressed.
Mental and emotional health is vital. Staying in touch with friends, family, and the community helps to protect and improve emotional health. People who feel connected to others are more likely to thrive than those who are not. Keeping stress at a minimum is another key. In addition to getting regular exercise, we should take charge of how stress affects us by taking 20 minutes a day to unwind. While all is said and done, it is equally important to keep the brain active to protect memory and mental sharpness. This is achievable through learning, playing strategy games or cards, or by doing crossword puzzles.
Taking the right steps will determine the way we embrace our golden years.
